This week is National Storytelling Week so we are celebrating storytelling and encouraging you to tell your own stories!

English
Your teacher may have directed you to look at some work around your child’s phonics and blending. We have suggested that this could be done instead of one of the planned English sessions rather than additionally. Your teacher will email you with further details.

Daily reading for pleasure
Please continue to make reading with and to your child a key focus. Aim for 10-15 minutes of reading a day to support your child’s development of skills and to grow their love of reading.

Reading Task
As it is National Storytelling Week, choose one of your favourite stories that you have at home to retell. Follow the instructions below to help develop your storytelling skills:
- Read the story several times.
- Put the book away then say the main parts of the story aloud.
- Read the book again to check any parts you couldn’t remember.
- Pace around your home saying the story out loud.
- Take one last look at the book.
- Visualise some key moments from the story to help you add more detail.
- Make a cosy reading corner and tell your favourite story to a toy or a pet.
We would love to see a photo or video of your child reading or telling their favourite story to celebrate National Storytelling Week, so we have added an extra assignment on Google Classrooms this week.
Spelling and Phonics
Below are the resources for daily Spelling or Phonics. If you have been directed by your class teacher, please use the daily phonics lessons below instead of the spelling sessions to best support your child. You will need some lined paper and a pencil for each of these lessons.

Monday: Today’s sound is ir like in girl.

Handwriting/Spelling
Before you start handwriting, please make sure your child does some fine and gross motor warm up activities. Click the links for some ideas: video 1, video 2, video 3, video 4 (for this warm up you will need play dough).
Practise some of the spellings found here in your neatest handwriting. Try joining your handwriting and remember to check if a letter has to be tall or sit under the line. If your child is not yet joining digraphs, you can watch a video lesson here.
We have recently had some questions about the letters we join (and don’t join) in school. Please click here to find a handwriting sheet to show the letters we do join. If a letter is not featured on the sheet, then it does not join to the next letter. For example, when writing ‘toys’ you would join t to o to y, but not y to s.
Writing
In each task, refer to the Year 1 and Year 2 Common Exception words list:
If your child miss-spells a Year 1 word, please ask them to edit it with a coloured pen (we use purple in school). If your child is confident with the Year 1 words, refer to the Year 2 list. You can also choose a spelling to focus on and write it on a post-it or bit of paper for them to refer to (try just a few at a time).
This week we will be retelling the story ‘The Way Back Home’ by Oliver Jeffers.

Task 1: Learning Objective: Correctly sequence events in a story
Create a story map of The Way Back Home or use a story mountain or story boxes sheet.

Maths
Daily fluency
Tasks 1 and 3 have a sheet of fluency questions with the resources. For Task 2, watch this fluency video.
On the other two days, continue to use Number Gym. Please continue playing ‘Bond Builder’ and carry on with the ‘Mental Maths Challenge’.

Learning Objective: Understand the meaning of ‘equivalence’ and understand that ½ and 2/4 are equivalent fractions.

Design Technology
Learning Objective: to design and build a purposeful and functional rocket which can launch.
Lesson 1 Task: to design a rocket using household materials.
Parents please think about the materials you have available at home or would like to start collecting. Please see the links on the PowerPoint slide for build ideas – only do what you can manage!

Learning Objective: to begin to understand that Christians believe that Jesus is God’s son. To be able to recall a story of one of Jesus’ miracles.

Learning Objective: 1. Jump forwards, backwards and side to side fluently with minimal wobbling. 2. Practise jumping with half and quarter turns and experiment with 1 footed/2 footed take off and landing.
